Do You Need an ESTA to Enter the USA by Land from Canada or Mexico?

Travellers approaching a US land border by car with passports ready

Last reviewed: 19 September 2026

If you are travelling to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, arriving by car, coach, train or on foot does not remove the ESTA requirement. Eligible Visa Waiver Program travellers generally need an approved ESTA before seeking admission at a US land border from Canada or Mexico.

Quick answer: Since 1 October 2022, Visa Waiver Program travellers entering the United States by land generally must obtain ESTA approval before arrival. An approved ESTA permits you to travel to the border; it does not guarantee admission. A US Customs and Border Protection officer makes the final decision.

The rule is easy to misunderstand because land arrivals were handled differently in the past. This guide explains who needs ESTA, how road and rail crossings work, which documents to prepare and what to do before setting off.

Is ESTA required when entering the USA by land?

Yes, in most cases. If you are a citizen or eligible national of a Visa Waiver Program country and intend to use the programme, you normally need a valid, approved ESTA before travelling to a US land port of entry. This applies whether you arrive from Canada or Mexico and whether you cross in a private vehicle, rental car, coach, train or on foot.

The same core eligibility rules apply as for air or sea travel. Your passport must be eligible for Visa Waiver Program travel, and your intended stay must normally be no longer than 90 days for tourism, qualifying business or transit. ESTA is not a visa and cannot be used to work, study for credit or remain in the country beyond the permitted period.

Traveller or journey Usual requirement
Visa Waiver Program traveller entering by landApproved ESTA generally required before arrival
Traveller holding a valid US visa appropriate for the journeyESTA is not used for travel on that visa
US citizen or US lawful permanent residentESTA is not required
Canadian citizenGenerally does not need ESTA, but must meet the applicable entry rules
Traveller who is not eligible for the Visa Waiver ProgramAn appropriate US visa may be required

Your nationality alone does not settle every case. Previous travel, dual nationality, immigration history, the purpose of the visit and answers to the eligibility questions can affect whether ESTA is available. If you already hold a US visa, follow the conditions attached to that visa rather than applying for ESTA for the same journey.

Why did the land-border rule change?

Before October 2022, Visa Waiver Program travellers could encounter a different process at land borders, often involving Form I-94W. The United States then extended the advance ESTA requirement to land arrivals. The aim was to use the same advance travel-authorisation framework across air, sea and land entry.

Older travel blogs and forum posts may still state that ESTA is optional at a land crossing. That advice is outdated. Use the current requirements for the date of your journey, and check official guidance again shortly before departure.

What happens when you arrive at the border?

ESTA approval is checked electronically, so you will not normally need a paper authorisation. However, saving the application number and carrying a printout or screenshot can be useful if you need to confirm the details you submitted. You must still present your passport and answer the officer's questions.

At a land port of entry, an officer may ask about:

  • the purpose and expected length of your stay;
  • your destination and accommodation;
  • your return or onward travel plans;
  • your ability to pay for the trip;
  • previous visits to the United States; and
  • goods, food, cash or other items you are bringing across the border.

You may also need an electronic Form I-94 arrival record and may be charged the applicable I-94 fee. The I-94 process and fee are separate from ESTA and can change, so verify them on the official CBP website before travelling. Do not confuse the date on an ESTA approval with the period you are allowed to remain in the United States. Your admission record controls the authorised stay.

How early should you apply?

Do not wait until you are parked near the border. A decision can take up to 72 hours, and a case may remain pending while it is reviewed. Apply when you begin planning and at least 72 hours before departure. If you are making a long road trip through Canada or Mexico, complete the application before leaving home so that a delay does not disrupt the entire itinerary.

Read our detailed explanation of ESTA processing times and pending status. After submitting, keep your application number and use the official status service rather than relying only on email. Our guide to checking an ESTA status explains what to look for.

Documents and details to prepare

A smooth crossing begins with consistent information. Before departure, check the following:

  • Passport: Use the same eligible e-passport recorded in the ESTA application. A renewed or replacement passport requires a new ESTA.
  • ESTA status: Confirm that the status is approved and that the authorisation has not expired.
  • Travel purpose: Be ready to explain your tourism, business or transit plans clearly.
  • Address in the United States: Keep the first accommodation address available where applicable.
  • Onward plan: Carry evidence of how and when you expect to leave North America if an officer asks.
  • Vehicle documents: If driving, bring your licence, registration, rental agreement and insurance documents as applicable.
  • Child documents: Every traveller, including babies and children, needs their own passport and, where required, their own ESTA. See our ESTA guide for children and babies.

Does an existing ESTA remain valid for a road trip?

An existing approval may be used for a land arrival if it is still valid, the linked passport remains valid and the traveller's circumstances have not created a need for a new application. ESTA is generally issued for up to two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

You generally need a new application after receiving a new passport, changing your name, changing citizenship or nationality, or when the correct answer to an ESTA eligibility question has changed. If you spot incorrect information, see our guide on what to do after a mistake on an ESTA application.

Does crossing into Canada or Mexico reset the 90-day period?

Usually not. A short visit to Canada, Mexico or certain nearby islands generally does not create a fresh 90-day Visa Waiver Program stay when you return to the United States. The time spent in the neighbouring country can count within the original admission period. A border officer always decides whether to admit you again.

This matters when planning a circular itinerary such as USA–Canada–USA or USA–Mexico–USA. Do not design the trip on the assumption that briefly leaving the United States automatically restarts the permitted period.

Common land-border mistakes

  • Relying on pre-October 2022 advice that says no ESTA is needed.
  • Submitting an application while waiting at the border.
  • Using an approval linked to an old, lost or expired passport.
  • Assuming that an ESTA guarantees admission.
  • Believing a side trip to Canada or Mexico automatically grants a new 90 days.
  • Forgetting that each child requires an individual travel document and authorisation where applicable.
  • Treating an I-94 fee as if it were the ESTA application fee.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for ESTA at the land border?

You can submit an online application from a connected device, but doing so at the border is risky because approval is not immediate in every case. Apply at least 72 hours in advance.

Do I need ESTA when travelling by train from Canada?

If you intend to enter under the Visa Waiver Program, you generally need an approved ESTA before travelling by train from Canada to the United States.

Do I need a printed ESTA?

ESTA is electronic, so a printout is not normally required. Keeping a copy of the approval and application number is still sensible.

Is ESTA enough to enter the USA from Mexico?

ESTA allows an eligible traveller to seek admission under the Visa Waiver Program. It does not replace a passport, satisfy customs requirements or guarantee admission.

What if my ESTA expires during my US trip?

An ESTA generally needs to be valid when you seek admission. Its expiry during an authorised stay does not automatically shorten that stay, but leaving and seeking re-entry can create a new issue. Read our guide to an ESTA that expires during a trip.
